BACKGROUND

The Kenyan education system is based on a cycle of 8-4-4 starting at the age of 4 years old: eight years of primary education (Grade 1 to Grade 8) , four years of secondary education (high school) and four years of University.  At the end of the primary education, Grade 8 pupils sit for national examination – Kenya Certificate of Primary Education. . The results of this exam have an impact on the high school they would be able to join for their secondary education.

Many pupils from underserved communities do not join High School as they cannot afford to pay the school fees and the extra items
required to attend secondary school.  They are back to wandering the streets , which makes them highly vulnerable to gang recruitment, trafficking, prostitution, early marriage, involvement in drugs and alcohol, crime and rape.

All of our pupils from Roots Institute are willing to go to secondary school and even wish to go to Boarding School. For all of them, it is the best solution to keep them far away from the slum and giving them the chance to have a space to focus fully on their studies
and break the vicious cycle of poverty. However, none of this kids can afford to pay the school fees and the extra items required to attend secondary school.

For a full year in Boarding School, 750 euro is required to cover all costs. 
This includes Boarding School fees (Teaching learning materials and exams, Boarding Equipment and Stores, Repairs, maintenance and improvement, Local travel and Activity fees, Personnel emolument (PE) transport, Administration, Electricity, Water and conservancy (EWC) costs), compulsory uniforms, Text Books, Basic furniture (i.e. sleeping sheets, School Bag, box for books, stationery…) and transport back and forward to Boarding School (3 times a year). 

Without financial support, they will be back to wandering the streets , which makes them highly vulnerable to gang recruitment, trafficking, prostitution, early marriage, involvement in drugs and alcohol, crime and rape.
